I am most drawn to Georgetown University School of Medicine because of its ideal of cura personalis. Through my volunteering with patients from underserved areas, I have seen that a person’s well being depends on their mental, social, as well as their physical health. I believe treating patients involves an individualized approach that focuses on their entire well being. At GUSOM I would be able to form my medical foundation with students and faculty who share this belief. I have loved doing research in college and would like to continue pursuing research in medical school. The Independent Scholarly Project is the perfect opportunity for me to explore my own specific interests in medicine. I minored in Spanish during college but I want to continue improving my language skills because I am interested in working with Hispanic populations as a physician. I am excited that with the community service requirement at GUSOM there are multiple opportunities to volunteer with organizations that focus on helping Hispanic Americans within the local community. I like that the first year curriculum includes a Service Learning module that specifically teaches students how to work effectively with medically underserved populations. The school also has multiple study abroad programs in Latin American countries. These programs would provide me the opportunity to learn more about the health care system of another country.
I am extremely interested in the Literature and Medicine Track because reading has always been a passion of mine. Though I was biology major in college, I took multiple literature courses because I believe there is always something to be learned from reading.
