The Morehouse College of Medicine is my top choice of medical school as its mission and vision both perfectly align with my personal goals and values. Given my goal to serve underserved communities, I am more than willing to practice medicine in underserved urban and rural areas to achieve my goal in life and promote the health among the most underserved and health-needy members of the communities especially the minorities. In addition, with the shortage of primary care physicians in the country especially in underserved areas, Morehouse is an ideal place for me to achieve my goals of serving these communities. After I moved to the United States, the transition placed an immense amount of pressure on me. It was difficult for me to assimilate to the new culture, new language, and build new friendships. Thus, I started looking for activities that helped me adapt to the new lifestyle and develop new friendships. Opportunities like volunteering at Beaumont Hospital and Zaman made me realize my ability to empathize and relate to other people of unique perspectives. It taught me how to be a team player and find creative solutions to problems. I developed a new summer program at Gleaners to support the children of low-income families. I faced several problems while planning this program from funding to introducing this program to the community. However, I managed this program with success. Through this experience, I developed my interpersonal skills by being able to communicate effectively and when faced with a problem I can manage to solve it. My service to these communities helped me learn, once again, about the health and economic disparities. It showed me that regardless of where underserved communities are located, they all share a similar problem: the lack of resources. My grandfather who died from cancer used to travel long distances to receive his treatment due to the lack of chemotherapy in this area. These experiences serve as an inspiration for me to continue my education and pursue a career in medicine so that one day I can serve areas in need.
