Galileo's Time Changes

Time and time again through history you find certain patterns of events that ultimately change the world around us. These patterns of events usually include two parties, one in which there is great change trying to be brung about, and another which brings great opposition to that first party. In history, we see that very clearly in recent years. Men like Martin Luther King Jr who fought against discrimination in America, and Gandhi who fought for the independence of India and the breaking of the caste system. While faced with great opposition these people persevered and strived to break the mold that the world had set for them even if it set them apart from everybody else. Galileo was called to Rome in 1616 by the inquisition to face charges of heresy. Galileo was cleared of the heresy charges but the Church “forbade Galileo from writing about, teaching, or otherwise advocating the Copernican system” (source). While he was forbidden to speak openly against the falsity of the geocentric system, Galileo continued to study astronomy physics and motion until 1632 when he published the, "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems," with the blessing of the pope, under the order that it be an impartial comparison of the heliocentric and geocentric ideas. Galileo’s book had a clear bias towards the heliocentric ideology and was therefore called to trial against the inquisition yet again. Galileo was repeatedly interrogated, and was imprisoned for a time in the Vatican. On June 22, 1633, he was officially charged with heresy, banned from printing anymore copies of the Dialogue, and forced to rescind his claim that the earth was not immovable, as the church insisted it was. He was detained in Rome until the end of the year, and was later allowed to relocate to the village of Arcetri, outside Florence, where he remained under house arrest for the remaining years of his life.
