Gamemaster’s final word “The secret we should never let the gamemasters know is that they don't need any rules.”- Gary Gygax. In some of my friend groups I am what you would call a Gamemaster by its original meaning. It’s not something that is very common anymore or that many people are all too proud of, however, I could not be happier saying it. The term gamemaster has had a very simple meaning through its lifespan specifically meaning someone who moderates a role-playing game (RPG). Even so, the word gamemaster has been used for many varying things throughout the years, for example: the storyteller of a campaign; the moderator of an online video game; and now, the customer service rep of any massive multiplayer online games (MMO). That person was the most powerful person controlling everything in the game except for the other player’s single characters. The goal of the gamemaster was to make the game fun for the players while also making it challenging and providing a long and thought provoking story. While this use of the word is still around today it is few and far between mainly due to the usage of tabletop RPGs having greatly decreased. It was soon given its definition of “’Game master,’ ‘gamemaster,’ or simply ‘GM’ is a title for the officials in an online RPG (role-playing game) which refers to those in power in a game whom do any of the following: devise rules and regulations for the game and design how the gameplay will be (developer), enforce those rules and regulations (moderator), or had a hand in developing the game's scripts itself (coder).” (Urban). Since the redefine of the word, gamemaster has had little to do with tabletop gaming, then becoming a nearly solely videogame based word. The gamemaster then had a lot to do with the people who created the games and not a lot to do with who told the story physically or who moderated them at the time.
