Author Gary Thomas (2013) opens his contextual publication with the concept behind why individuals pursue marriage instead of the traditional focus behind who the individual marries. Both are necessary components for determining marital success, however, before one considers whom they chose to marry, he or she must evaluate why they desire to pursue marriage. Thomas (2013) continues to articulate the Christ-centered foundation established upon seeking Christ and flourishing in one’s spiritual walk with the Lord. Relationships require corresponding purposes and mission to maintain longevity in marriage. Without first seeking God and His kingdom before choosing a marital partner, one will jeopardize his or her future contentment.

Success is regulated by humility to admit personal faults and recognize the faults of one’s potential spouse. True love is not measured by always accepting positive attention, but by accumulating marital partnership between a wife and husband. In other words, marriage is a symbiotic relationship in regard to continuous giving. Prayer must be consistent to achieve spiritual happiness, for without a Biblical foundation the marriage will depreciate. To further justify this point, Thomas (2013) articulates, “Taking stock of…spiritual weakness, early marriage seemed like the wise thing to do” (p. 89). Although I do understand the argument he wishes to convey, I do not necessarily agree that young marriage is a wise decision. Pursing marriage at a young age allots problems to arise early into the relationship. The couple may not be ready to pursue marriage in various other capacities outside of strong sexual desire. Responsibility to admit weakness is commendable, however, I believe further self-control and wise counsel should be addressed primarily before jumping into marriage.
