In the future where society is looked differently upon, many things are different. Some priorities are valued while others are shamed on. In Gattaca and Brave New World, there are many differences between the two. Differences having to do with choices being made between both. There is a certain amount of will given to every being born, but one is more privileged than the other. In Gattaca people are allowed to make individual choices, but in Brave New World people are not aware of individual choices due to conditioning. However, their professions are chosen differently between each other. In Gattaca, they are allowed to have an idea and a choice of what they want to do with their lives, while in Brave New World the people are all assigned a job before they are born and conditioned to like what they do. In the Film Gattaca, Vincent has had a love for outer space. He studies and dedicates himself to becoming an astronaut disregarding his DNA. From a young boy, to a young man, vincent has always had the dream and choice to want to go up into space as an astronaut. He never stopped working for what he wanted. In Brave New World, before a child is born, it is known what profession they will be born to. “They’ll grow up with what the psychologists used to call an ’instinctive’ hatred of books and flowers. Reflexes unalterably conditioned. They’ll be safe from books and botany all their lives.” (Huxley 22). They are conditioned to hate certain things so they will grow up to not question or dislike their job assigned. The people in Brave New World are not allowed to chose a profession in their society, nor think about it as they are conditioned to like their profession. Careers in Brave New World are a must and never allowed to be different or changed. What is assigned to them is what they must live with and like.
