The novella, Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck took place in Salinas, California and was set during The Great Depression. It tells the story of two fictional men, George and Lennie, two migrant workers who have to work in order to get a living. During the book the author Steinbeck shows the importance of having a companion or having a good relationship with someone. In addition, he explores themes such as loneliness, aspirations, dreams through George and Lennie’s relationships. The two characters, George and Lennie, seem to have a strong bond with one another, and have what other people would describe as a parent and child relationship. Which would create a lot of loneliness in the novel. However since the author decided to have George and Lennie as the group of people that do travel together it showcases the importance of having relationships during difficult times could help a person mentally. Even seeing how George and Lennie travel together and have a good relationship, most of them got suspicious on why they were traveling together, and it was shown when in the second chapter the boss of the ranch was suspicious of their relationship, “The boss deliberately put the little book in his pocket. He hooked his thumbs in his belt and squinted one eye nearly closed. “Say—what you sellin’?...”, “I said what stake you got in this guy? You takin’ his pay away from him?...”, “Well, I never seen one guy take so much trouble for another guy. I just like to know what your interest is.”(12) This shows how lonely the people at the ranch are that they were surprised when George and Lennie were traveling together, thinking the George just wanted Lennie’s pay or just use him to do all the work, since it wasn’t something that was common in the novella.
