Intraocular Pressure Case Studies

Glaucoma is a caused by multiple factors, however one change associated with it, is an increase in pressure inside the eye known as “Intraocular pressure” (IOP). Other factors that could lead to IOP include not enough fluid circulation in the anterior portion of the eye. Causes such as blunt trauma or chemical injury to the eyes, an infection of the eye, and if any of the blood vessels get inflamed or constricted. Glaucoma often occurs in both eyes but damage to each eye might differ. In this case study the retinal ganglion cells (RGC) were looked at because these often die when intraocular pressure is elevated and could lead to loss of eye sight. This experiment was conducted on mice to test if oral losartan treatment slows down the retinal ganglion cell death caused by intraocular pressure increase. The experimenters used 497 female mice that were 2 months old. The mice were given oral treatments of the drug in their drinking water. The losartan treatment along with two other drugs was given 2 weeks before intraocular pressure was introduced. These drugs were included to be used as comparison. One treatment included drinking water with no drug added as a control. Next IOP measurement were conducted and recorded in a chart, followed by blood pressure measurement. Losartan treatment suppressed detectable loss …show more content…

The methods and materials were done in an organized manner. The discussion took the results and related it back to the purpose of the experiment and the results achieved. The experimenters included some of the ways that the experiment could have been improved as well as other research that still needs to be done before concluding the effects of Losartan. The conclusion did restate the hypothesis and stated what the experiment was done for. The references provided were all a great way to find anything that did not make sense during the
