Introduction
I. Since the 19th century fraternities and sororities have been a part educational institutions.
II. According to a study conducted by the New Jersey Institute of Technology there are over 9 million Greek members nationally.
III. When I first came to college this fall I decided to go through the rush process. Having joined the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity here at East Carolina University has motivated me to shed light on the positive aspects of joining Greek life.
IV. Today I am going to discuss how Greek life benefits individuals by emphasizing the importance of philanthropy and development of strong communication skills.

Each year Greek organizations have raised over 7 million dollars and provided over 10 million hours of service work nationwide.
2. In 2012 study completed by Pete Parker (who is member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity) he analyzes philanthropy in Greek organizations across the US. His study revealed that 95% of Greek advisor’s at various colleges and Universities listed philanthropy as “extremely important”
3. Locally here at ECU there are Greek Philanthropy events constantly happening every week. Sorority events such Pi and Adpi and Sink a Sigma all raised money for various charities. During the flooding caused by hurricane Matthew SigEp held a canned food drive for the Greenville Salvation Army.
4. SigEp ultimately donated some 400lbs of food and 30 cases of clean water. Also in the spring SigEp holds it Summit Up Fundraiser and donates all the proceeds to the American Brain Tumor Association.
5. The effect of joining Greek life and its philanthropy is teaching individuals the importance of giving back and providing a services to your community.
