Lack of Diversity in Greek Life College organizations such as Greek life and various clubs are proven to be a huge part of a student’s success. Sororities and Fraternities serve as an institution where large groups of students are brought together in a positive way. It is supposed to encourage people who feel out of place to find a family and a place they are comfortable to be around. Though Greek life started out as a place for large groups of people to come together, it has turned into a place where the “[...] wealthy, powerful and well-connected” come to join (Walker). Many organizations have reported that their membership is mostly of the white ethnicity. Subculture is a small cultural group within a larger cultural group who share different views and beliefs than the larger group. Effectively, by doing this their likelihood of interacting with other races and ethnicities is substantially decreased. Greek life’s subcultures are negatively impacting the most important years of interactional experience. A student’s peer group is vital to the influence on maturation and development during the undergraduate years. Student’s who tend to hang with their subculture form relationships with those people in part because of the proximity of those peers. This in turn, also lead to a decrease in the likelihood to form relationships outside of that subculture. In a study done in 2004 Park found only fifteen percent of US adults expressed that they had a friend of another race with whom they were close with (643). Although personal agency, the capability of an individual to make independent choices, impacts who one decides to interact with so do social
