Fraternities and sororities have been around for over a century and have essentially become an integral part of the collegiate experience. However, negative stereotypes and poor conduct of individual chapters hinder Greek-letter organization’s ability to successfully grow and develop in the present time. As well, individual members of Greek-letter organizations far too often find themselves dealing with unfortunate events. Therefore, in regards to national social fraternities and sororities, both ethical and social implications become a major factor to consider when discussing Greek-letter organizational sustainability. Thus, to do so, all chapter presidents of the fraternities and sororities on campus would come together to discuss pertinent Greek Life-related matter. As previously mentioned, negative stereotypes and poor conduct of chapters across the nation affect the perception regarding Greek Life at Robert Morris University. Therefore, through a series of three meetings, in which chapter presidents, and other concerned stakeholders, come together to discuss both campus and world-wide Greek Life topics, a Code of Ethics would be created. Ultimately, conversations at these meetings would revolve topics and events that poorly reflect the great things that fraternity and sorority members do within their communities and for one another. After all, in the 2015-2016 academic year, only 12% of the student body was involved with Greek Life, but those members raised over $48,000 for philanthropic causes and completed over 10,000+ hours of community service – all while maintaining excellent grades to the extent that members had an impressive average GPA of 3.28 (Robert Morris University Greek Life, 2016, p. 1). Thus, according to Sasso (2015), “Fraternities and sororities at American colleges and universities remain pervasive, enduring social institutions on their respective campuses. They have yet to falter despite widespread criticism related to their challenges surrounding sexual assault, hazing, binge drinking, racism, and elitism” (para. 1). Therefore, while members of Greek-letter organizations have been exposed to and have possibly even created and attributed to terrible events and activities on campus, fraternities and sororities still remain an important part of most colleges and universities. However, the issue is not organizations that hold their members accountable, but rather those that do not and contribute to negative stereotypes and stigmas associated with Greek Life.
