When working with kids and adolescents a group leader can face many challenges. According to Corey, Corey, and Corey (2010) both children and adolescents need to have a good relationship with parents for long-term success. This also brings the challenge of confidentiality since it is very important for both age groups; group leaders need to make the group members aware that what is being discussed during session may be communicated to their parents. Especially in leadership, as I was given the opportunity to be a leader, I have experienced the challenges when handling a group with members that are new to me. At the beginning, I felt awkward and scared to speak up and lead the team because I do not want them to perceive that I forcefully involved myself and also directing them too much. The ability to recognize this would allow me to setup discussion between the resistant member and other members through the use of dyads or triads without “direct participation of the leader” (Jacobs et al., 2016, p.411). In contrast, the member may feel resistant to the group members and not the leader; in which case breaking off into dyads, placing myself as the member’s partner, would allow for better insight while still allowing other member to hold focus on the group’s purpose. First off, I can say that I truly enjoyed this experience as a facilitator for my group. Not only was it fun, but I also learned some very valuable lessons that I can now put into my repertoire as a counselor. I always enjoy learning from others and hearing new perspectives on different concepts such as my topic of stress, which made it fun. You need to understand the group dynamic, people may see themselves as individuals but for leader its forming the transition from individuals to group. Transition phase may be difficult because people hardly understand each other’s talent and roles and procedures are not clear to them. As a leader you help a group of people to become a team which work toward a common goal and collaborate each other. Start with building relationships among team members, clarify roles to them, identify resources available to them. Additionally, proper meetings are suggested to sit together with the team, discuss progress, highlight issues and resolve conflicts if any exist.
