If I was depressed and seeking treatment for a psychological disorder, I would likely want to choose group therapy as the type therapy for this disorder. “Research suggests that group therapy is of help to many clients, often as helpful as individual therapy” (Comer, 2016). I believe that I would want this type of therapy because I would be surrounded around people that have the same issues as I had. Knowing that I’m not alone dealing with depression, and other people understand what I am going through would give me hope. When people can relate themselves to other people, with similar situations, and the same type difficulties they face, the more likely they are to discuss their true feelings. Subsequently they are put on another medication to help the side effects from the first medication. In America, we use medications to freely, the pharmaceutical industry is in the money making business. They give Dr’s incentives to distribute their medications, so the Dr’s push whatever drug is given as sample to patients. Unfortunately, for the patients some of these medications are so new, all of the long term side effects are still unknown because most drug studies only last 1 year. The pharmaceutical companies receive reports based on doctors NPI number’s which shows what prescriptions are prescribed from each doctor. However, I do believe that medications are a necessity for people who do not benefit from psychotherapy alone, but I do think that psychotherapy should be intensely explored first. I look at it as the same as I do with other health issues, if you are able to exercise to control a health issue without medication, you should try exercising to see if it helps first. The right medications can make a difference in someone’s life that has a chemical imbalance, so if that’s what it takes to make life stable then they would benefit from medications. In some extreme cases someone who is against medications; or if they don’t find one that works effectively, they could alternatively try “electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)” (Comer, 2016) as a treatment.
