A few days ago I posted that I wanted someone to purpose legislation that would stop the shootings, but allow me to keep my AR 15. I took the post down because the conversation went exactly where I didn’t want it to go, but predicted it would. Instead of proposals on legislation, I was having to defend my right to have an AR 15. Gun control advocates are demanding legislation, so I was hoping someone could come up with a proposal within the parameters I described.
While I used a more philosophical way to answer the question in the title, the article itself is filled with data tables that provide similar answers. Gun control has a negligible effect on gun crime itself. If you make obtaining a weapon difficult, people will turn to illegal methods to obtain a weapon when living in an area plagued by crime. Thereby increasing gun crime to a point where more gun control is being issued. The data in this article proves that gun control laws do relatively nothing in solving this
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed (“Second Amendment”). Though times have drastically changed since the second amendment was written, our right to protect ourselves should never change. With that statement, not everyone should be allowed to own a firearm. There are laws and restrictions to protect people from creating terrible situations. These limitations are put in place to allow law-abiding citizens security of their right to protect themselves.
According to the first Amendment of the United States Constitution, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Freedom of expression is considered the most crucial of all freedom, as it allows for a person to fully express themselves without government intervention. However, we must define what freedom of expression is. It emcompasses freedom of speech and media, but also guarantees everyone’s right to speak and write openly about their point of view. Without freedom of expression, citizens will not be given a safety
Gun Control is a never-ending debate, and is not one issue, but many. For most gun control advocates, gun control is a crime issue, safety issue, and they would like to see more regulation and legislation to ban guns in the hands of civilians. For gun rights advocates like myself, gun control is a rights issue, a political issue, a racial issue, and a mental health issue. But one of the great things about our country is that we have to freedom or right to our opinions and beliefs. As someone who believes in protecting all rights and maintaining our freedoms, the right to bear arms has proven its worth by means of self-defense, leaving less people vulnerable to attacks, burglary, and other violent crime.
According to German Lopez, a reporter for vox.com, since the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, “there have been more than 1,600 mass shootings, killing more than 1,800 and wounding more than 6,400” (Lopez). Within a 6 year span, there have been almost 2,000 mass shootings with the most recent being at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. With all of these mass shootings, the topic of gun control has been a huge controversy across the United States. Many people want to make a change and want gun laws to become stricter; however, many people think it is an infringement on their 2nd Amendment right. In order to limit gun violence in the United States, the government needs to make background checks more thorough, ban semi-automatic weapons, and raise the age to purchase a gun.
As mass shootings are becoming more frequent, it has opened up many controversial possible solutions that could be done to help prevent such inhumane things to happen. In 2017, according to Gun Violence Achieve, they’re have been 61,512 gun accidents that occurred, with 15,593 leading to death. This numbers have increased over the past years, and the questions that many want an answer is if stricter gun control is need for the safety of the people. The division of country is between the two perspectives of gun control being placed. One side, mostly known as the Republicans, are revolving their beliefs to the second amendment, where the right to bear arms gives them the right to own weapons.
Gun Control Gun control over the years has been a controversial subject, with people arguing for both sides. The 2nd amendment states that everyone in the U.S. has a right to bear arms. Mass shootings and suicides by firearm have been a growing concern for many people living in the U.S. Numerous people making the argument that there should be more gun control. Having gun control would help lessen the deaths by firearms in the country for a variety of reasons.
“In theory, this would result in taking guns out of the hands of criminals and putting them into the hands of responsible, law-abiding gun owners. Thanks to the nation's patchwork of background check laws, however, it's very easy for guns to wind up in the hands of criminals, again.” (Leber 1) Countries such as Canada, Great Britain, and Japan also have low gun violence rates. The U.K., in 2011, had 0.07 gun homicide rates for every 100,000 people, Canada had a 0.05 gun violence rate for every 100,000 people. Japan had a 0.6 gun violence rate for 100,000 people.
The proposed gun control laws are superfluous and detrimental to society. These laws are in violation of the second amendment, are negated by the black market, and tend to raise crime rates. While senators have good intentions by passing the stricter laws the unconsidered negative consequences may outweigh the positive ones. The Constitution is the foundation of any law that has been passed since the documents creation.
On, February 14, 2018, a mass school shooting in Florida got the nation’s attention, however, gun violence has always been an issue, and it is only getting worse. Now people are saying there needs to be something done, and there are many that agree. Starting off there should be stricter gun laws, because in today’s world it is too easy to get handguns and assault rifles. With, the capabilities a firearm holds, such as taking people’s lives there must be stricter restrictions that could help cut down the gun violence and save lives. Increasing the age of purchasing a firearm would be one step.
The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Today Americans argue whether more rights or more control on firearms is needed. Many people believe that firearms are for protection when others believe that the firearms create crime. There are two sides of this debate on guns, either people are for gun-rights or people are for gun-control. Gun control and gun rights are a big issue in the U.S. but the Second Amendment definitely beats controlling firearms around the United States.
Earlier this months, on valentine’s day, 17 people were killed by a 19-year-old former student who was able to legally purchase an Ar-15 assault rife. The irony that this man can purchase a deadly assault weapon but cannot buy a beer is almost enough to laugh. Almost. Among first world countries, the United States is one of the worst for deaths by guns, both homicides and suicides. Every other first world country has extensive restrictions on gun access and see much lower rates of gun violence and gun death in comparison to America.
Everyday in the United States, ninety families are changed forever; guns claim an average of ninety lives every day in the United States, 33,000 lives in a single year. Gun control has been a debate in the United States for many years and is constantly thrusted back into the public’s attention by horrific shootings. These shootings constantly cause individuals to petition the government to place stricter and stricter regulations of guns. However, these policies cannot be the solution to this problem. To determine a solution that will be both effective and constitutional, we must look at statistics and research that has been conducted to determine the best course of action.
“Just in 2018 there has been 18 school shootings, on average per week” (snopes:How many school shootings have taken place so far in 2018). The incidents that have occurred have been a big impact in people 's lives. Yet no one with power has spoken about the problems regarding the recent shooting. See, there are two main sides of gun control, the side that agrees and the side that doesn’t. People who agree believe that no one should be able to own a gun, or that there should simply be stricter gun control laws.
