A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed (“Second Amendment”). Though times have drastically changed since the second amendment was written, our right to protect ourselves should never change. With that statement, not everyone should be allowed to own a firearm. There are laws and restrictions to protect people from creating terrible situations. These limitations are put in place to allow law-abiding citizens security of their right to protect themselves. If laws take away all the guns from the good people, the only people who are going to have guns will be criminals. Firearms cannot do anything independently, excluding human control; therefore when a dangerous incident occurs and a gun is fired the attention of law enforcement first wants to know is who was responsible for the weapon being discharged. Gayle S. Trotter, a well-known gun control advocate, states, “Law-abiding gun owners will not accept blame for the acts of violent or deranged criminals. Nor do we believe the government should dictate what we can lawfully own and use to protect our families” (Trotter). Discussing upstanding citizens who are gun owners, Trotter’s statement is impeccable. These gun owners will do anything in their power to retain their rights to their weapons. However, through his assertion of what the government should or should not do, he is incorrect. The government should have a say in what types of guns citizens are using to protect their families. For example, guns that are used for household protection should be limited by the amount of ammunition that they can hold. There is absolutely no reason that a household gun should have an excessive number of rounds. The only thing the government concerns itself with is the danger that guns bring, not the protection that they can give. Most individuals would assume that the government would focus more on where criminals were getting guns than what law abiding citizens have for home
