Regrets, they always bite us in the butt in the future. We think that they just determine our future, but that’s not always the case. A person’s past does not define the future. No matter what you go through, everyday is a new day and you can overcome the tragedies of the past. With courage, determination, or strength, no matter what your past is, you can excel in your life and become an amazing adult.
To begin, having strength, can help people get through a terrible childhood. For Bethany Hamilton, her strength led her to becoming an amazing woman. Bethany show strength by overcoming her big issues in life. When she was 13, Bethany suffered from the loss of an arm due to a shark attack. She was very discouraged and she thought her surfing career was over, but with strength and no loss of hope, she worked her way up to success. Over years and years, she finally won first place in a surf competition. One person who I strongly believe carried this, was Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman knew of the dangers that would come upon her if she had helped the slaves that she did. She had bravery, and such courage that helped her become the amazing woman that she would later in life. Before Harriet saved the slaves, she was one herself. She knew hands on how it was to be a slave and yet, she had courage and help all those people become free. An example from the book would be the character of Jem. Although Jem knew that the angry mob could’ve so easily beat him up, he had such courage that he wanted to stick up for his own father in that moment in time (Lee, chapter 15).
