Every Resident Advisor (RA) answers the on-call phone with a bit of apprehension, but when the caller tells you that they are concerned that their friend may hurt herself physically, all your nerves stand on edge. It was this experience and others like it that reaffirmed my decision to pursue a career in the Healthcare field with a specific interest in mental health. My life’s journey began on a small multiracial island where we believed and practiced “every creed and race find an equal place,” these words taken from our country’s national anthem. In our multicultural society, religion played a large role in influencing the societal norms and practices which were of a conservative nature.
You’re in the Doctor’s office waiting for your time to come for the yearly visit. An extensive time goes on, your scheduled visit time has passed. Most likely the doctor is still occupied with another patient. This is the time a Physician assistant will come save you from your bothersome delay. Physician assistants work under the supervision of a doctor, surgeon, or medical professional to provide support to a healthcare or medical team.
I am extremely honored to be recognized as a potential member of the National Honor Society (NHS). Being considered to become a member of the NHS means I have accomplished one of my academic and personal goals. I have shown with my GPA that I am a student who goes above and beyond but more than just demonstrating my determination in my academics, I continue to portray this hard work in athletics, my community, and at home. I have taken this opportunity to possibly be a part of the application process for this prestigious organization, I am fully ready for this enormous responsibility and I will fully devote my time to this. A small 5-year-old girl walking downstairs through the outside back door of her grandmother’s house in Mexico, sliding down each step of the staircase, set in the exterior connection between the two floors, just to be able to use the restroom on the first floor; a reminiscence that portrays commitment. Uniquely, this one experience defined my character. I’ve replayed this moment in my head many times through difficult times. I’ve had to face fear, anger, disappointment, and uncertainty all alone. Yet, I had never met any other person with whom I could identify with those same trademarks; until I became a medical assistant.
After 10 years working as a registered nurse in many aspects of healthcare, felt an overwhelming desire to advance my career and myself to expand my role in caring for others. Becoming a nurse practitioner has always been a goal of mine. During my time working as a nursing manager, I became acutely aware of the need of skilled and talented providers that desire to provide passionate care to all individuals. I became especially concerned with the needs those with limited access to healthcare services. I knew my desire to care for individuals in a more autonomous role and I set out to develop the skills needed to meet the need I witnessed.
As a child of two nurses, I have always been partial to the medical field. I have chosen to pursue physician assistant studies because of the responsibilities the position holds, such as examining and diagnosing patients and giving treatments. The career stability is also an aspect that draws my attention to the profession. The healthcare field, while stable, is always evolving; new technologies, procedures, treatments, and even discoveries of diseases have those working in the field constantly learning and experiencing something for the first time. I require a challenging professional career, and I believe this field will provide that.
mI have been fortunate in having the opportunity to work as a bank healthcare assistant at Hereford County Hospital. Within my role, I have been able to enhance my knowledge and gain first-hand experience within various of clinical environments, and gain a wider prospective of the roles and responsibilities within the healthcare profession. I feel that I have been able to develop a variation of new qualities that has helped achieve high standards to all aspects of my role. For the last year, I have been successful enough to gain further knowledge in higher education on a foundation degree in health and social care at Worcester University, I have now entered my final year to complete my level 5 in Health and social care. It is a great honor to have the chance to apply to be a member of NHS. Although my academic achievements are the reason why I have the opportunity to apply, my demonstration of the pillar of scholarship isn’t the only reason why I would be a good candidate for NHS. Because I exemplify all four pillars of the National Honor Society: scholarship, leadership, character, and service, I believe that I would be a good candidate for NHS. Many activities that I have done in the past, and still do today, have given me opportunities to demonstrate my leadership skills.
As an individual with a passion of stepping into the lives of others during testing times towards making life easier, I am determined to develop a fulfilling career as a nurse practitioner. Having graduated in BSN from Barry University in 2014, currently I am serving the emergency department at SMH as a registered nurse. My fervor of transforming into an impeccable nursing professional through sharpening my knowledge and skills has inspired me to continue my education. At present, I am enrolled for the Master of Science in Nursing program at the Nursing School of Barry University and getting specialized in Nurse Practitioner Acute Care. I look forward to graduating in 2020.
A career as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is a natural extension of my personal, educational, and research experiences. Although my path to nursing has not been a straight line, every experience that put me on this path has shaped my passion and dedication to psychiatric nursing. After losing loved ones to suicide at a young age, I made a promise to myself and to them that I would dedicate my life to helping individuals struggling with mental illness. This promise led me to study Psychology at UC Berkeley, where I fell in love with clinical research investigating the efficacy of treatments for mental illness.
When I think about where I want to be with my life ten years from now, I envision myself as one of the most competent Physician Assistant in the area that I serve. I am an immensely passionate person and when I have a desire to do something I put every ounce of effort I have into obtaining my outcome. I know that as a result of my passion and desire that I will become an outstanding PA. There has never been a point throughout my college career that I have doubted my desire to practice medicine, and I know that this is due to my love for the field. I love interacting with patients and families.
With my desire to assist others and sincere interest in healthcare, my aspiration is to become a physician assistant. I am confident in my abilities to meet the standards, as well as surpass the expectations for a career in medicine, due to my high-achieving academics, notable work experience, and strong qualities and traits. My positive attitude towards learning and willingness to perform at maximum efficiency to achieve my goals has helped me succeed academically. With my excellent academic skills and overly competitive nature, for example, I exceeded the minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA set forth by a majority of the graduate programs. I devoted long, tedious hours into studying diligently and earned a 3.86 cumulative and a 4.0 science GPA by my third year.
I want to be a physician because I want people to grow old. At the age of 6, one of my closest friends was diagnosed with leukemia. By age 8, the disease claimed his life, robbing him of the opportunity to experience the privilege of growing old. Unfortunately, we live in a society of vanity. We see the process of aging and choose not to embrace it.
I have worked with HR staffing policies and reconciliation during my time at Rockwell Collins. I am currently the lead contact on HR staffing updates for the organization's Engineering Program Management group. I update the staffing headcount for each cost center group in the department, and work with Program Managers to answer ad hoc inquiries on their weekly staffing updates. Although my experience with HR regulations is limited, I am eager to learn and hope to put my education in managerial concepts to use in this role. I have held various leadership positions during my time at Iowa State University.
