The Struggle of High School Athletes
Athletes put in a lot of time and effort into their sports and for high school athletes it’s especially hard to juggle school, sports, and personal life. And for some people, it doesn’t even seem like the work pays off. Imagine being an athlete in high school and putting in all of the blood, sweat, and tears to try to make it to the next level with a scholarship or to even go pro, but it all gets washed down the drain because of one reason or another. High school athletes aren’t rewarded for their hard work and their performance in any way, so they should be paid based on how well they perform since they put so much time and effort into their sports. This is double the rate of American adults. If someone doesn’t perform as well as they feel they should have they can become stressed and depressed and think that they aren’t good enough. This can cause their personality to change and affect not only themselves but the people around them too. A person can become incredibly stressed and overwhelmed from trying to balance and keep track of sports, school, and their social life. A recent study has shown that only 1.3% of high school athletes go on to get a scholarship to play a sport that would help them pay for college and prepare for their future. High school athletes should be getting paid some amount of money so they don’t think that all of their hard work for their sports has gone to waste after their sports career ends if they don’t end up getting a scholarship from a college. Equally important, another study shows that only 0.00075% of all high school athletes go on to play a sport professionally. That’s how low the chances are for someone to eventually make money just from playing sports at a high level. Also, high school athletes usually don’t have time for a job since they already have to balance their time between school, sports, and personal life. It would be nearly impossible to add a job into that list.
