More and more people are becoming aware of the dropout rate in America. People like President Barack Obama and Education Advocate Missy Remiss are speaking out to stop the next generation from quitting school. The best solution to this problem is to raise the legal age for leaving school to eighteen years old. With this solution, students will be required to stay at school until they’re eighteen. One result is that the dropout rate will lower and kids will stay in school. This new change can also make possible dropouts graduate and find jobs. Students can also get a better income and find better jobs compared to those not getting a diploma.

For example, the data analysis average income in 2009 shows that those with high school diplomas are making about $27,380 dollars and those without are making only $19,540 dollars. There is a $7,840 dollars difference. That much money could mean the elevation from poverty to some people in the U.S. High school dropouts have that much to lose. Another article, “Paul Morgan Talks with Missy Remiss on WSCH” says, “Those without a high school diploma have lower earnings.” This is another piece of evidence that clearly defines the financial situation of both high school dropouts and graduates. On the contrary, there are many residents in this country whose social and economic situations are dire. They cannot afford to stay in school. One example is Marissa who is girl personally affected by her family’s financial situation. In her letter she writes, “You know how hard things have been at home for the past three years,” According to the letter, Marissa has quit school to help her family. That is a valiant effort on Marissa’s part, but eventually that effort won’t mean much. To elaborate, the same text says, “I found a full-time job at Marcy’s” A job at Marcy’s does not seem like it would pay a lot. So that job cannot support her family for a long time.
