In discussions of higher education, one controversial issue has been whether it is needed to obtain a degree in order to succeed. Many think that, in schools, it should not be required to force children into believing that going to college is the only way of success. In reality it is the only way. If a child is not taught that concept, he may grow and think that he can sit around and do nothing, and the world will be handed to him. A higher education can bring success and teaching children that it is not necessary, or not teaching them at all, is wrong. In Jonathan Kozol’s article, he talks about how schools tend to make their students pick a career and leave them to believe that it is not necessary to have a higher education to reach it. A principal he interviewed said “We want to make them understand that, in this country, companies will give you opportunities to work, to prove yourself, no matter what you’ve done” (pg. 304). This meaning that it doesn’t matter if you have a higher education or a degree, you will still find a job if you have the skill. That is only true in very few cases. But in reality having a higher education will increase the likelihood of finding a job. Teaching children that any education is pointless is not correct. A child should be taught that there are many opportunities in going to college-whether it is to find a job or obtain a degree for a career
