Around 2500 years ago, Buddhism emerged as a major religion in India. It was started by Siddhārtha Gautama, better known as the Buddha. Hinduism and Buddhism are two very similar religions, as they both have an idea reincarnation. They both want to be able to break the cycle of reincarnation to find peace. Both Hinduism and Buddhism were founded in India, however, Buddhism sprouted later from the already established Hinduism. However, Buddhism rejected many parts of Hinduism. First off, Buddhism rejected the belief that there is a god and an eternal soul as well as the belief structure of Hinduism.

In Hinduism, they have a caste system which is very rigid and position can only be changed through death and karma. The Buddha believed that people can change who they are through their life, not just through reincarnation. He also rejected the structure of Hinduism. This was done as there was no need for a social system in Buddhism because it was very egalitarian. He also wanted no authority as seen by the statement “Do not accept what you hear by report, do not accept tradition, do not accept a statement because it is found in our books…..be lamps unto yourself.” Another teaching that was different was the 4 Noble Truths. The 4 Noble Truths were the major teaching of the Buddha and they were where: that life is full of suffering, suffering comes from desire, suffering stops when desire stops, to stop desire you go through the Eightfold Path. These were the basic building blocks of Buddhism. For the noble truths, the final two truly demonstrate are the core ideals within Buddhism. Another teaching which deviates from Hinduism is the Middle Way. The idea of the middle way is to be between both indulgence and being ascetic. The idea is followed through the Eightfold Path.
