The book starts off in Pearl Harbor when the Japs bombed Pearl Harbor. A very interesting thing i learned that soldiers during WW2 called the Japanese fighter planes meat balls because the planes had a picture of the Japanese flag on the wing of the plane. This book takes places in the 1940’s when the US

Walter makes the book different from other books written about this specific day he uses human drama of this attack: spies behind it: Japanese pilots: specific crews struck in warships: generals: sailors: the housewives: men in bases and airfields: children that had a comeback that was filled with hatred and courage. During the first chapters the author just goes over the time and introduces many characters' names, he describes every detail about what was going on in Japan and Hawaii, also the days and hours on high sea before the attack. Most characters are quickly introduced they are so many that when you finish the book you won’t be able to remember any of them. The author gives very little background as to why Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, for a person to be able to understand everything going on in this book they must have at least a good vision of the historical event before being introduced to all the people who were there that day.
So many soldiers are shoot and blown apart from artillery and 51,000 people died during this war, everybody knew that they were most likely not going to make it out alive and they all learned to deal with it. Another major theme is division among the nation because it was a fight between the north and the south of the United States. Both sides had to make themselves think that the other side was filled of people that were less than human like if they were fighting a different country or something because if not they probably wouldn’t be able to handle this war. In the Declaration of Independence everyone is given equal rights and this is showed in the novel because everyone does not have more or less.
World War Z shows the reader throughout the story that bad things can happen, and sometimes you have to fight to survive. This story is about a family that gets stuck in a very unusual traffic jam. After being stuck in traffic for a time, the whole city breaks out with a deadly virus that turns people into zombies. Due to the extreme zombie outbreak, the healthy people go on a killing spree to try to eliminate the virus for good. World War Z is truly an amazing book because the author, Max Brooks, makes it very easy to predict if the virus will get eliminated, clarifying why Gerry leaves to fight the zombies, why the family stays in the bunker, and to characterize Gerry, the main character.
This novel talks about the life in America during those times back in 1937 how many people struggled to live. Many people during those days lost their jobs. There was no welfare state or unemployment benefit. Disabled or old people had to depend on their families or charity and keep working for as long as they could. Everyone was so competitive in order to get a job.
In the novel, the author changes the tone throughout the book to add emotion to the story. In the beginning, she uses a depressing tone while also including statistics and the death rates throughout World War II. Hillenbrand says that “...fewer than 30 percent of men whose planes went missing between July 1944 and February 1945 were rescued. Even when the plane’s location was known, only 46 percent of men were saved,” (Hillenbrand 91).
