Investigation on the Double Murder of Holmes and Dr. Watson The queen of mystery novels, Agatha Christie, once said, “Crime is terribly revealing. Try and vary your methods as you will, your tastes, your habits, your attitude of mind, and your soul is revealed by your actions”. No matter how perfect the crime is, as long as it is man-conducted, there is always a solution. On Saturday May 21, 1892, Holmes and Watson were found dead near Glasgow's shipyards. Plainview. Purchasing firearms in Glasgow is extremely difficult as the permits for gun ownership is hard to obtain. Therefore, as one of the few gun owners in Glasgow, H.W. Plainview is inarguably one of the focused suspects of the murder. To add, considering Dougie Beard’s testimony, either someone with the initial of H.W. or M.H. have recently purchased a handmade gun from his shop. This further narrows the suspects to only two people; H.W. Plainview and Mary Habsburg, as they are the only two people who meets Beard’s testimony amongst all of his customers. In this case, according to Aristotle's law of non-contradiction, the culprit is either H.W. Plainview or Mary Habsburg. However, the name Mary Habsburg did not appear on the list of 30 suspects thus her innocence is confirmed. Mysteries, as often as not, are strongly related to deductions, thus can be solved by the use of syllogisms; the crime is conducted by either Mary Habsburg or H.W. Watson. Plainview originally moved to Glasgow for that his wife can live closer to her family. However, his wife has recently abandoned him for her new lover, Dr. Watson. The crime of loving is forgetting. Therefore, Plainview always had a loathful attitude towards Watson and feels subordinated to him. His rationality is ultimately blindfolded by his envy and hostility as a result of his excessive love towards his wife. According to Aristotle’s law of excluded middle, there is no middle group between two ideas hence between Plainview’s love and hate, if he does not feel love for Dr. Watson, then he hates Dr. Watson.
