The Holocaust, being one of the darkest times in history, was the systematic and inhumane killing of more than eleven million people, six million of which were Jews. The National Socialist German Workers party, also known as the Nazis, believed that the 'pure Germans' were a superior race than all others. During one of the Nazi meetings, the Final Solution was created. The plan was to exterminate all Jews, homosexuals, gypsies etc. and create a land of perfect people. The Nazis particularly hated Jews, as sometimes the Nazis sent the them off to labor camps, where they worked till they died of starvation, exhaustion, and disease. Neighbors simply watched as, next door, innocent little children were shot in their mother's arms, only because were born a Jew. During this dark time however, some people did not forget their benevolence and compassion. These people were called the rescuers and the Resistance. While these other rescuers are praised for their bravery and self sacrifice, the Danish rescue most unique. Because of the nationwide effort, all but fifty-one of the Danish Jews survived the Holocaust; their homes unharmed and their bank accounts untouched. In 1943, when the Nazis invaded Denmark to 'protect it', they tried to round-up and deport all the Danish Jews. The Danish king and people did not support this idea, as they had never discriminated between the Jews and the non-Jews. King Christian X was the king of Denmark from 1912-1947, and the only king of Iceland from 1918-1944. On April 9th, 1940, Nazi Germany invaded Denmark in a surprise attack. A Nazi official was sent to Christian X to speak about the 'Jewish problem'. King Christian X replied to the Nazi official saying, "We have no Jewish problem in our country. The Jews are a part of the Danish nation" (Rossel 85). While all the people in other countries sat back and watched the Jews get deported or killed, King Christian X showed that he valued everyone in his kingdom and played a great role on saving the Danish Jews. He showed his people the right way to go, the path of the good people. Preben Munch Nielsen was born in a Protestant family in Snekkersten, a small fishing village in Denmark. In April of 1940, Nielsen joined the resistance as a courier. He later became more involved, when the Gestapo began hunting down Danish Jews. "We began to help Jewish refugees. We his them in houses near the shore and brought them to waiting boats at an appointed time. Undercover of the darkness, we took up to 12 Jews at a time to Sweden."
