Have you ever wondered how teens act differently in social media than in real-life? This is applied in the article, “The Secret Social Media Lives of Teenagers”, an article that tells us the effects of social media towards teens and how parents should be involved in solving this issue. Written by Ana Homayoun, she claims that while it gives teens the opportunity to explore their identity development, it could also lead to poor decision making and life-altering decisions. Homayoun’s argument is effective because of her use of word choice, evidence, and appeals throughout the article. Homayoun relies on pathos in order to create an emotional impact towards the audience. Homayoun herself writes, “What would motivate such seemingly intelligent teens to behave so recklessly online?”(Homayoun 3). Homayoun is insisting that some teens can behave differently online which can result in bad behavior and punishment when caught. The use of pathos from this quote weakens her argument because it convinces the reader that people should stay away from social media. However, Homayoun doesn’t bring up benefits of social media as a counterexample. Again, this results in her argument being less effective since she relies on emotional appeal in order for the reader to become more convinced. Next, Homayoun uses logical appeal in her argument. Homayoun states, “And because so much of today’s teen social media use is rooted in a fear of getting caught, many teens have detoured their online activity to different ways of cloaked communication”(Homayoun 2). The essence of Homayoun’s argument is that teens feel safe from not getting caught when the privatize communication to a select group. The use of logos throughout the Homayoun’s article makes her argument effective because of how this example is applied to many users of social media.
