Horace Mann is known as the father of education, and his influence is still felt in today’s schools and in society. He wholeheartedly believed in education for all, which is consistent with the beliefs of education in America today. His hopes were that with a universal education, it would protect the democracy of the United States by keeping the citizens educated regarding government operations. He was also hopeful that America would be able to avoid the class systems in Europe. Additionally, he felt as though education was the equalizer of all men. Still today, Americans value the gift of education and have established laws to protect everyone’s right to an education.
Primarily, Mann developed the Common School Movement which centered around the belief that public education should be free for all and funded by taxes. He argued that the best way to take all children and make them responsible citizens was to educate them. He felt …show more content…

Mann’s influence also led to the adoption of the first board of education in the nation, where he also served as secretary. He used his place as secretary to create reform. The practice of having a board of education in place to make decisions for a school district is still widely practiced today. Moreover, Mann advocated for more female teachers and standard training programs for all teachers. Importantly, Mann saw the value of grouping students from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds together, a practice still used today.
Another practice Horace Mann established was an educational journal, which was printed every two weeks in order to share ideas with teachers and schools in Massachusetts. In today’s society, multiple educational publications are shared around the world as journals, magazines, online, books, and many other ways.
