Horace Mann was a man who changed the education system for ever. He proposed six new principles for the education of children, 1. citizens cannot maintain both ignorance and freedom, 2. education should be paid for and publically run, 3. education should be provided that embrace children from varying backgrounds, 4. education must be kept separate from religion, 5. education must be taught using tenets of a free society, and 6. education must be provided by well-trained, professional teachers. In order for these principles to apply he created a series of schools to train teachers. This dream of his made the school system what is is now, he created the boundaries of what needs to be taught in schools .
