Our mission at the hospital I currently work at is: Extending the healing Ministry of Christ. They focus on healing the whole person-mind, body and spirit. Their mission statement: “The skill to heal, the spirit to care”, which I love. I might say we use a Democratic system which is a very open and free style, we usually do huddles every twelve hours for each shift, we have open-ended questions, discussions and themes regarding the unit, new things that we could do to improve our department and patient care. I personally like this democratic leadership style because it let us express our point of view or communicate about any kind of decision, it also encourages the staff to share their own opinions without being banned. I work in a 20 bed unit and the nurse to patient ratios are usually 4-5 to 1, but there is always a free Charge Nurse that we call our team leader. We also got an acuity-based staffing system that depends on patient’s needs. Our first priority is the patient, and we treat patients the same no matter of gender, color or culture they are the same to us, showing respect, honesty, fairness and compassion. This type of leadership “is based on two beliefs: that people are rationale and they will change if it is in their best interest”. (Blais & Hayes, 2011). As team members, we are all accountable and we can rely on each other if we needed to. We also got a “buddy system” that means you are assigned to another co-worker when you need to go for a lunch break or just go answer your call light in case you are busy. Democratic leadership also refers to adapt to better ways of doing or resolving things, it gives you flexibility when a situation constantly
