At Allina Health, our mission, vision and values have been in place for the past eight years and as a leader I’ve had the opportunity to orient and remind staff of the foundation that we base the work provided every day. Relating our actions to this is something that I have been able to embed in discussions every day. Vision can be a very powerful tool in leading to a common purpose. I chose my husband to practice this coaching experience, and as my newest employee I wanted to share with him the foundation of the work we perform at Allina Health. I shared the mission, vision and values and with each item tried to tie them to both the care of our patients as well as how we perform as a team in the continuum of care. His feedback from the session was very positive. “I felt very inspired to be joining a team that cares not only about the customer (patients), but also it’s employees. Allina recognizes that the mission will only be accomplished if there is focus on both groups. The vision, mission and goals are a clear framework to ensure balance in the workplace. Clinically she is one of the strongest individuals in our department, on the team she truly belongs I assured her and I would do my best to help her, but she had to make a choice. Staying in a workplace that you hate can be toxic, so I needed her to decide if she wanted to stay with the team and work to improve her interactions with colleagues or did she want me to help her find a new place to work. My goal was to help her be successful. She wanted to give it some thought and left for the day. Fortunately, she was in my office first thing the next morning to develop a plan to improve her actions in the team
