Of all the horrors in history, many as the darkest point in humanity’s past revere the holocaust. Between the years of 1933 and 1945 existed more inhumanity and injustice than most minds today can comprehend. As a whole, the Holocaust serves as a nightmare- a glimpse of what sick behavior humans are capable of, a cautionary tale for future generations- but what occurred behind closed doors, a large factor contributing to many of the millions of innocent lives lost, were copious experiments on prisoners of concentration camps, experiments done without sympathy or regulations, experiments that went beyond the grotesque torture many believed to be the extent of the holocaust, experiments lead by a man by the name of Josef Mengele.

He performed surgical procedures, involving blood transfusions between twins, unnecessary amputations of the limbs, and reactions to lethal germs or diseases that one of the twins may have possessed. Mengele desired to observe how the transfusions, amputations, and infections would affect the other pair. He would round up all the twins he could obtain, inject chloroform into their hearts, and dissect them, observing each and every piece of the twins’ bodies. Sometimes he would even sew together twins, in anticipations of being able to create Siamese Twins. However, Josef was particularly fond of twins and prisoners with physical abnormalities. Josef developed these interests in a wide variety of medical aspects such as Heterochromia, which is the difference in coloration of the iris in twins. He attempted to artificially change eye colors, and collected the eyes of victims that he had murdered for his experimentation. Mengele’s experimentation with Dwarfism was quite unusual. In January of 1945, the Soviet Union began to make its way through Poland, advancing towards Auschwitz. Mengele was able to flee for the Soviet forces detained a while but was eventually. However by this point he was able to disguise himself as a German military officer by the name of Fritz Hollmann. When he was placed under US custody, he was able to escape because US officials unknowingly released Mengele. They were looking for Josef Mengele on the most wanted Nazi war criminals list, not Fritz Hollmann. He then worked as a farmhand in Rosenheim, Bavaria from 1945 to 1949. In 1949, he was able to proceed to Buenos Aires, Argentina where he lived off of his father’s money, and worked as a carpenter. Argentine agents were able to provide him with a new identity (Helmut Gregor) since Argentina was Nazi friendly. While Mengele was safely hidden, his name was mentioned multiple times in the Nuremburg trials. The Allied Forces truly believed he was dead, but eventually, a German authority officer had found divorce papers and more records showing recent activity under Mengele’s unofficial name in Argentine. All his crimes were documented prior to the criminal trials and the International Military Tribunal, and German authorities sent out a warrant for Mengele’s arrest into Argentina, and deportation from South Africa in 1960. Mengele became frightened of being caught and moved to Paraguay. Another doctor famous (Adolf Eichmann)
