17 million dead and another 10 million wounded. World War 1 was nothing like the war that came before it. New technology, including machine guns and mustard gas, created an environment for a stalemate to develop, further drawing out the war and causing more casualties. The end of the war resulted in 17 million dead, another 10 million wounded, and a treaty leaving many frustrated Germans ready to start another war. Although territorial loss influenced World War 2, the main causes were military restrictions, war guilt, and reparations.
WW1 was the first industrial war, as it was marked by the new weapons and military technology introduced to aid in fighting. As the level of fighting increased, military technology advanced throughout the war. Machine guns, planes, tanks, and artillery were some of the most used and advanced weapons. Most of the machine guns at the start of the war were heavy and needed a team of soldiers to operate it. This shows how when they were first used, they weren’t very well developed as it was new, primitive technology, and were mostly used as defensive weapons due to their immobility.
New technology made WWI significantly different from earlier wars since there were new and more powerful weapons, allowing them to kill more people and damage a country more. Other previous wars used insufficient guns where you had to get very close up and could not damage you a lot. Rifles and cannons were revolutionary to this war since without them they most likely would not have been nearly as many deaths—on both sides—than if the soldiers were still using early futile weapons. 2. The decline of the Ottoman Empire began in the mid-18th century when Enlightenment ideas were educated to people and enslaved people or hard laborers began to think about freedom.
How WW1 weapons changed the world of warfare “European nations began World War I with a glamorous vision of war, only to be psychologically shattered by the realities of the trenches. The experience changed the way people referred to the glamour of battle; they treated it no longer as a positive quality but as a dangerous illusion,” Virginia Postrel. WW1 was the first war to truly tear away from the fantasy of battle, and replaced it with the brutal reality of widespread death. Weapons, and upgrades to existing weapons, introduced in WW1 forever changed modern warfare. World War 1 introduced and upgraded many staples of modern anti personal weapons.

As many people would agree on, the biggest game changer in technology is the machinegun, as this powerful work of art managed to single handedly change the layout of war, and introduced trench warfare as necessary tactic in World War 1. The machine gun would fire out 600 rounds per minute.

With the introduction of a variety of new weapons and technology, everyone involved thought World War I would be over quickly, and life in Europe could continue as usual. However, the 20th century technology combined with 19th century war tactics had the opposite effect. World War I is ranked as one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. Even with all the new technology, most of World War I was fought in trenches, resulting in huge casualties along the Western Front. Remarque describes the impact of mechanized warfare, "Bombardment, barrage, curtain-fire, mines, gas, tanks, machine-guns, hand-grenades--words, words, words, but they hold the horror of the world” (132).
