Ray Charles is a blind African-American male who found his calling as a professional performer on the piano. Touring across the Southern musical circuit, the soulful singer gained a reputation and then exploded with worldwide fame when he pioneered incorporating gospel, country, jazz and orchestral influences into his inimitable style. He counted all his money in singles. Ray Charles did not always lack his sight. Although the young Ray began to lose his sight at the age of five, not long after witnessing his brother drown.
