The Palestinian Arabs had almost no land to themselves. The Arabs tried to capture and control Palestine so they could have their own state. Israel, Egypt, and Jordan took Palestinian territory. Therefore, Arabs did not have any part of Palestine, even though the land had been rightly granted to them by the U.N. Partition Resolution (Beitler). The Arab-Israeli War includes Arabs attempting to gain their own land, and the Israelis trying to gain control over the land that had been given to them from the United Nations (“The Arab-Israeli War of 1948”). The United Nations adopted Partition Resolution, which would separate Great Britain’s former Palestinian commission into Jewish and Arab states during the month of May in 1948. The United Nations said the religious area around Jerusalem would be under international control managed by the United Nations. Israel would be considered a Jewish state. The Arabs thought the United Nations’ action was siding with the Jews/Israelis. The Arabs never agreed to the idea, considering they would still have to live in Jewish territory. The Jewish army included the Haganah, the militia, the Irgun, and the LEHI. The Arabs’ plan was to avert the establishment of the Jewish state and to stop the Partition Resolution. The Jews’ goal was to control the allotted territory the Partition Resolution had granted them. Once Israel gained their independence on May 14, the fighting escalated. Other Arab forces joined the Palestinian Arabs in attacking the former Palestinian mandate territory. Just the night before, the Arabs commenced an air attack on Tel Aviv. The Israelis resisted the attack. Additionally, Arab armies from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Egypt invaded more territories (“The Arab-Israeli War of 1948”).
