World War 1 plays a huge part in advances of technology, we now use in the world today. World War 1 originated in Europe and took place during the early 1900’s. Allies were formed between Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and the United States who went against another alliance consisting of, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman empire and Bulgaria (World War 1). Power was established when looking as to which alliance had better advances in the war. From July 28, 1914 to November 11, 1918 there was many inventions and technological advancements that changed the war forever. Submarines and warships turned the war away from the battlefields and into a water war. “By the early twentieth century, submarines were filled with two engines: An electric one for underwater, and a cheaper, faster, diesel for surface travel,” (Weapons and Technology of World War 1, pg. 30). After submarines were fully developed, they were ready for war and proved to be effective. Submarines were used against merchant ships as an underwater force. Submarines were a special weapon that was most effective when comparing them to other weapons. “German submarines sank 2,439 allied ships, compared to only 234 sunk by German mines or surface ships. All together, German submarines sank nearly 5,000 ships during the war,” (Weapons and Technology of World War 1, pg. 31). Although these submarines weren’t as big as merchant ships, they were responsible for the destruction of most merchant ships and starved countries out of the war. Great technological advancements improved warships for battle. Warships were huge ships made out of steel and were driven by powerful steam turbine engines (Weapons and Technology of World War 1, pg. 28). New tactics came along with the development of warships such as the blockade. “...Both sides used their navies to impose blockades on their enemies, to prevent them from importing goods from overseas,” (Weapons and Technology of World War 1, pg. 29). Medicine slowly became more advanced throughout the war. “Ambulances, antiseptic, and anesthesia, were three elements of medicine emerged from depths of suffering in World War 1,” (Hampton ellen). Soldiers that were wounded often died from infection due to not enough advances and experience in the medical field. However, Henry Dakin, a british biochemist, “...perfected a solution of sodium hypochlorite, which killed dangerous bacteria without burning flesh,” (Hampton Ellen). His technique became known as the “Carrel-Dakin method” and doctors across Europe adopted his technique during the war. This discovery lead to less amputations because the wound could now be cleaned properly. With new medicine and techniques in hand, ambulances became more popular during the war. “September 1914, American ambulance field service grew to more than 100 ambulances by the end of the first year,” (Hampton Ellen). This resulted in more soldiers being transported for any injury they may have encountered. By the end of the war, ambulance service grew to 2,500 by the end of war. Medical attention and techniques continued to expand throughout war. Medical advancements impacted the war in the best way because it helped save many
