Atticus, the main hero of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, said this while defining courage to his son, Jem. Atticus protects and cares deeply for his family. He is the pillar of hope and positive American values throughout the story. To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in the small, divided town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the 1930s. Harper Lee. Maycomb has a white section on one side and a black section on the other. The white side of Maycomb is very critical of the black side and possesses the accepted racist views of the time. This book represents Boo and the silent guardianship he took over Scout and Jem throughout the story. However, if Atticus had not taught Jem and Scout to be tolerant, what would have happened? Would Boo still have saved them? Numerous people throughout society would not extend a hand to someone who does not respect them. So, because of Scout’s willingness to change and treat Boo well, new bonds formed and Additionally, when Calpurnia, The Finch household’s Black maid, brought Scout and Jem to the Black church, they were instantly accepted by the congregation members. Calpurnia brought them over the tracks to the Black portion of the town because no one was able to accompany the children to church. In preparation to bring Jem and Scout over, Calpurnia made sure they were fitted with the finest clothes in order to represent her well in front of her friends. Once the children were finally at the church, all heads turned to them, but only one man made judgements about them being there. The Reverend even allowed Scout and Jem to participate in the church service.
