Courageous people do not feel fear. Courageous people manage and overcome fear, so that nothing stops them from taking action. Harper Lee, the author of To Kill A Mockingbird, shows that courageous people have to do things that they do not normally do. She also demonstrates a brave person has to do something without anything stopping them, they do not feel fear. In the book, Atticus Finch stands up for what he believes is right, even when everyone is against him. Also, Atticus teaches his children in ways many would not or do not approve.

However, Atticus wants his children to know the truth. Jem, Atticus’ son, explains to Aunt Alexandra that Atticus told them about Cousin Joshua,who, “he tried to shoot the president” and “it cost the family five hundred dollars to get him out of that one--” (Lee 176). Atticus believes the children should know the truth rather than live of lies, which is very courageous for him, even though Aunt Alexandra gets upset with Atticus for telling them. Atticus states “why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I don’t pretend to understand…I just hope that Jem and Scout come to me for their answers instead of listening to the town” to Uncle Jack while talking about his court case (Lee 117). Atticus said all of this while knowing Scout is listening, so that Scout will understand to go to her father and not listen to the town folks. Atticus does not want his children to be racist and to do this they cannot listen to the town folks which is courageous for Atticus because the town folks will judge them for not doing things how everyone else does
