In Hosseini's The Kite Runner, the imagery of Hassan's cleft lip goes from being merely a physical trait to eventually symbolizing a representation of his overall character, working to develop Hassan's backstory, allowing the revelation of Hassan and Baba's relationship, and emphasizing Amir's ultimate change in character. As Hassan's character is introduced, his cleft lip is presented as one of his traits, the only negative trait that he possesses.

With all these emotions, fear is heavily mentioned, from the early childhood of Hassan to the rescue of his nephew. Fear is defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat (Dict.com) Assef is a person of fear. The taliban is an organization of fear. In the book, Assef and the Taliban constantly have power to enforce fear within the eyes of the people.
It takes almost the whole novel for Amir to show this trait. Growing up as a kid he showed only cowardice and fear to those who bullied him. He let Hassan do the job of defending. A situation that haunted him throughout the years of growing up was the incident that happened in the alley when he watched Hassan get raped by Assef. Hassan does not object to this scene due to his cowardice.
Amir felt like he had betrayed Hassan by not helping him of telling anyone and he felt he should be punished. “I sat up a wedge of moonlight streamed in through the window, I said I watched Hassan get rapped. A part of me was hoping someone would wake up and hear so I wouldn’t have to live with this anymore. Hosseini 92-93. Amir wanted someone to hear him so he wouldn’t have to live with this anymore as a secret.
In the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, there are some very intriguing comparisons and stark differentiations between the father and son, Hassan and Sohrab. The two are both victims of sexual abuse, they both save Amir from harm, and yet their childhoods and personalities are very different. Hassan and Sohrab are sexually abused by the same man, Assef. When Hassan and Amir compete together in the kite flying tournament, everything starts out perfectly. They work together as a team and manage to cut everyone else’s kites out of the sky.
