Sherlock Solves the Perfect Crime Jack the Ripper, an infamous serial killer who savagely murdered five female prostitutes during the 1800s, caused a public panic never before felt in london. The police were desperate to discover his identity; but at the end of the official investigation, no one was ever convicted of these crimes. The Jack the Ripper case coincidentally coincided with Sir Conan Doyle’s first novel “A Study in Scarlet”, whose titular character, Sherlock Holmes, is a famous detective known for his detailed oriented approach to solve mysteries. His unparalleled skills of observation, application of information, and deduction allowed him to solve criminal cases. Sherlock Holmes would have been able to outperform the police by utilizing his detective skills, which paired with his great dedication to his profession and his vast connections inside of London, would have allowed him to apprehend the killer. This is one aspect that set him apart from the police and ultimately makes him the greater detective. As seen in “A Study in Scarlet”, Sherlock does not limit his examination to the immediate crime scene but would go one hundred feet away to see if anything further could be gained. The crime scene, however, is only one aspect of the case. In order to gain better insight of the case, Sherlock also conducts a much more thorough examination of the victim’s history. Sherlock is able to piece all the information together into a cohesive solution.
