How Does Substance Abuse Affect My Family

The topic I have chosen for my research paper is a topic this has directly affected me and my family. Substance abuse. This is a difficult subject for me to bring up because I don't really like admitting that these things happen in my family, but every family is a little bit messed up and I finally feel the need to accept this. Substance abuse is something that I struggled to understand as a kid and didn't really get how much this directly affected me. Some members of my moms side of the family have problems with things like drug and alcohol addiction, so that puts me at a greater risk with the fact that addiction runs in part of my family. I've had multiple members of my family sadly pass away and one member actually go to jail because of substances such as drugs and alcohol.

There are substance addictions like alcoholism, drug abuse, and smoking. There are also process addictions such as gambling, spending, shopping, eating, and sexual activities. In my interview with my mom and dad one of the major questions I had asked them was why do people continue to abuse these substances when they know they are hurting themselves and their loved ones. “In my experience with this, its not so much that they don’t realise they hurt themselves and others, it’s that they use these substances as a way to get away from their real world problems.” these people that abuse drugs and alcohol use so much that their bodies get a dependency, which makes them crave more of that substance. In an article written in 2017 it states that “Addicts of opiates and cocaine must have increasingly frequent doses to maintain their desired physiological effect”(Blaser). This basically means that people who are addicted to these certain substances build a tolerance to the drugs, which leads them to using more amounts of drugs, or different
