Friar Lawrence: Good or Bad? The fact is that Friar Lawrence was trying to help Romeo and Juliet be happy, and settle the feud between the families, but he was responsible for the death of them and never helped anyone. the friar is responsible for their deaths because he married them in secret, didnt tell anyone, and had very poor execution for the faking of Juliet's death. From these doings he killed two lovers and didn’t settle the feud. The very first mistake the Friar made was marrying the couple in secret. Even as soon as act 2 we see that he know it will bring nothing good when he says to Romeo “So smile the heavens upon this holy act / That after-hours with sorrow chide us not!”(2.6.1-2). This means that he is unsure that the heavens will approve of the marriage. Eventhough he still thinks it a bad idea, he still went through with it. If he was a good person and was fearful this wouldn't work out, he should of stopped the wedding until it was the right time, if it ever was. Also, he didn't stop the wedding from happening because he thought it would serve a greater purpose, uniting the Capulets and Montagues. If he had done this he could have saved two lives a unite the two families at once. He wouldn’t have to go endure the pain that he has said he went through "These violent delights have violent ends / And in their triumph die, like fire and powder"(9-10). When he said this he was giving sorrow for the deaths and this would have been avoided if he had just told the families. If all went as planned, he could have told the families immediately after and worse case the shun both Romeo and Juliet, saving two lives of innocent people.
