Romeo & Juliet are the cause of the outcome of the story. I disagree with “More Than Reckless Teenagers” by, Cathlin Smith. Her description is an inaccurate analysis of Romeo & Juliet” through her claim that they are too in-depth kids fighting for their right to individuality. Romeo and Juliet is a love story based on two families with long-time feuding and fighting over dominance. Romeo and Juliet are the children of each of two opposing families. Romeo and Juliet fall in love against their family's will. Eventually, this love comes to a tragic ending with the lovers taking their lives. No family wins in the end. Romeo and Julie were reckless in their decisions throughout the play and showed how immature they were about life. They are the cause of the tragic outcome because they ultimately made the decision to end their lives. This was a permanent decision that can’t be undone. The naivety about taking their lives was evident from the very start of this book. “And follow thee, my lord, throughout the world (2.2 148). This is a good example of Juliet thinking she will follow Romeo to the ends of the earth forever and their love will be as strong as it is now. The main point of Smith’s interpretation of the play is that she says that Romeo and Juliet are very complex people who knew exactly what they were doing and were not foolish and irrational but layered and complex people that wanted to get out of their current situations. Cailin Smith claims that the two are complex characters who understand consequences and big real-life problems. “Coupling specific acting choices with the words from Shakespeare’s script clarifies Juliet’s character beyond lovesick thirteen-year-old to that of a constrained young woman fighting for her right to individuality.” I believe she is just a lovesick kid who doesn’t even know what individuality is yet. She is only thirteen years old and has not had much life experience to be able to handle big life events. Her brain isn’t even fully developed at this point to be able to make big life-changing decisions. In the play, Romeo says “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.” This is another example directly from the text that states that Romeo is impulsive and immature and is a young naive boy who is in love with another young naive girl who he barely knows. In Smith’s article, she doesn’t touch upon the immaturity and age of the characters but portrays them as level-headed individuals who think through their decisions and understand the gravity of life's problems and how to solve
