Currently racism is frowned upon in our currently culture, but some people are still affected by this today, with police brutality , discrimination, etc. Compared to what happened in the novel these ideas are not that big of a problem. In To Kill A Mockingbird racism affected one of the characters lives significantly. Tom Robinson is a major character, and the center of a major plot point in To Kill A Mockingbird. He is one of the three people who were treated like the mockingbird. These three characters are Atticus, Boo, and Tom. The characters represent the mockingbird because they are treated poorly and are punished even though they were innocent.

Some characters get treated poorly for only the color of their skin, the main character that gets affected by this is Tom Robinson. The evidence that supports my statement is that Tom was still guilty in court even though the evidence was stacked against the Ewells. Even though Tom was in the right in this situation, he was considered guilty to the people of Maycomb county because of the fact that he was black. Boo is treated like monster that did all of these things that never really. He is the center of multiple false rumors that were created about him, that have permanently tarnished his reputation. His character is completely misrepresented. Instead of being a deranged, enraged individual, he is actually very nice to Jem and Scout. He gives them gifts such as “a white gold watch”(81). He also tries to save Jem and Scout from being killed by Bob when he didn’t have to help them at all.
