The complex character seems like just an extreme hunter but figure out a horrifying fact, that he clearly is proud of, and doesn’t regret pursuing. General zaroff redefines hunting when he restocks his island with a new type of life.
When Zarroff hints that the “new” animal is human, there are many inward scream. Shocked, everyone reading immediately understands, but Rainsford doesn’t pick up on the hint. Because the readers know that Rainsford is a courageous hunter, the imagine he will devise some elaborate plan of escape. “… must have courage, cunning, and above all, it must be able to reason” (19). Emotions run high here, and some might even be screaming, “Run!
In the short story, The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, the author is commenting on war in a way in which people will change and be violent to protect themselves and others, even though they understand the pain of being hunted. Rainsford, a boy who washed up on the shore of the forbidden island, was hunted by General Zaroff, a general who got disinterested in hunting animals, so he created a new game in which hunted people instead. Unfortunately, Rainsford’s arrival provided General Zaroff with new prey. Rainsford understood what it was like to be hunted by General Zaroff, but in the end, he still hunted and killed Zaroff for his own, and others to later be trapped on the island’s survival. Hunting is a game where you can have fun killing a certain type of animal, but could be very dangerous at the same time. In “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford is a character that is a very good hunter. So one day him and his buddy's went out on a yacht and went out on the sea to go to the caribbean to look for this island to hunt Jaguars. But while on a yacht he feel of the boat and fell into the sea. Moving on he was on this Island and met this General.
The Similarities The best part about these two story are that they were similar and many different ways. This early conversation between Whitney and Rainsford foreshadows the events to come. Rainsford will soon experience the position of the jaguar as he is hunted by Zaroff on Ship-Trap island. The brief exchange highlights Rainsford 's outlook on the sport of hunting. He expresses a lack of empathy for the plight of the hunted.
As Rainsford was running for his life from the hounds down the trail. “The hounds raised their voices as they hit the fresh scent. Rainsford knew now how an animal at bay felt” (24). Zaroff considered Rainsford as the prey he was tracking before. The hunter understands how an animal feels.
Rainsford is initially shown to not show any empathy to the wild animals he hunts. Zaroff is no different, with him declaring, “I hunt the scum of the earth: sailors from tramp ships--lassars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels,” (9). Zaroff hunts humans who have the unfortunate luck to arrive on Ship-Trap Island. Zaroff gives no second thought about hunting humans because he finds them to be the perfect sport to hunt, and finds pleasure in hunting them. General Zaroff and The Atrocity That is Hunting Humans Hunting animals or people for sport is cruel,unethical, and unfathomable. Human beings like General Zaroff, who believe that hunting the weak of humankind is acceptable are ruthless monsters. I strongly disagree with General Zaroff’s way of thinking. Hunting humans is cruel and inhumane. Zaroff claims he is “civilized”(14) yet he says he hunts humans because it gives him “pleasure”(14).

In the story there are multiple differences and similarities between characters Zaroff and Rainsford because he hunts animals, and Zaroff hunts humans and they both love hunting. Rainsford and Zaroff have one major differences and is that what they hunt rainsford hunts animals, and Zaroff hunts humans.
In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford is a big-game hunter who has proven himself to be more civilized than General Zaroff. Once Rainsford finds himself on Ship-Trap Island, he quickly realizes that he will be the one being hunted rather than being the hunter. Rainsford is more civilized because he refuses to kill people for sport, he treats other humans like people and not animal, and he demanded to leave because he didn’t want to be part of the hunt. First of all, Rainsford is more civilized because he refuses to kill people for sport. In comparison, General Zaroff kills people all the time for sport which makes him a murderer, and even tries to convince Rainsford to hunt with him.
Hunters believe animals are not capable of reasoning and they see them as something lesser than humans. Throughout time, these positions can change. The short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell, consists of General Zaroff being the hunter and Rainsford being the hunted. During the story, their positions change to the complete opposite.
“The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is a story about a man, Sanger Rainsford, whose ideals and overall character change throughout the story, specifically about hunting, due to his encounter with General Zaroff. At the beginning of the story Rainsford is a stuck up man. He could not care less about any other living things other than humans. He believes all living wildlife are expendable and only there for his pleasure of hunting. During the story Rainsford has to make many quick and overall difficult decisions during his encounters with the ocean, General Zaroff, and the island wilderness to survive, that change how he thinks about animals.
A Questionable Flaw In a fight between good versus evil, good is the recurring victor. However, when the good and evil are fighting within oneself, the outcome is not as desired as we wish it would be. Abraham Lincoln once said, “I would rather be a little nobody than an evil somebody.” Although good should definitely triumph evil, most people struggle between the two and it is a recurrent flaw.
However, it does not change for the better. In the middle of the story when he finds out Zaroff hunts fellow human beings, to Zaroff's surprise, Rainsford’s thought and reaction is utter shock and disbelief. “‘But you can’t mean-’ gasped Rainsford. ‘And why not?’”(10). Zaroff knowing Rainsford was a great hunter he hoped that Rainsford would accompany him on a hunt; however, Rainsford accuses him of being a cold-blooded killer.
