Over the past decade, the world has been plagued with a criminal organization that has no precedent. This particular group has gone from a couple hundred members, to garnering over 30,000 members (Sciutto). Many of us have already heard about the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, commonly known as ISIS, but a majority of people have not yet scratched the surface on what this group truly is and why it is such a problem for the modern world. There are many solutions when it comes to combating this problem, but which answer is right? When looking at the options, there is no easy answer; not one solution can you avoid civilian casualties. This is something many people do not account for when they call for action against ISIS. It’s time to bring to light some solutions and the consequences that these proposed solutions present. This solution is my least favorite one, and to me, the most barbaric one, too. I understand that people are upset and don’t understand the ramifications of an all out bombing, but this one of worst solutions. To begin, when you look at the numbers, about 50 civilians are killed per every one terrorist (Columbia Law School). This is shocking to say the least, 50 civilians, 50 innocent people, 50 families destroyed because of the hunt for one terrorist. We as Westerners are supposed to better than the members of ISIS, we want justice, but at what price is this “justice”? The degradation of human life, as much as some do not want to believe it, is on both sides, not just on one. In fact, to drill the point in more, the U.S. has a civilian-casualty-ratio; this ratio is the amount civilians that can be killed if it means taking out one terrorist.
