The reason behind the commencement of the first World War has long been pondered through time. An argument is that the war started because of a fight for land. Another argument is that the dream of imperialism drove many countries to war. It is Believed that a growing sense of nationalism within the Balkan region drove many nations to war. Nationalism in the European countries is similar to militarism. While militarism is the building up a nations army for the purpose of gaining superiority over other countries, nationalism was the action of taking pride in one's country even to the point of despising other countries. It is reasonable to say that the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand is the reason why many countries were at odds with each other. Before the war, Austria- Hungary seemed to constantly annex countries that had strong Serbian influence. After Austria- Hungary started adding more and more countries to their empire, the hate of the Serbians for the Austrian-Hungary Empire grew.
