Child Abuse
What is child abuse exactly? Most people will agree that just simply whipping your child is abuse, but some will disagree. Child abuse is any type of harm towards child that does not fall under punishment, this type of harm results in bruising, depression, and etc. Emotional abuse, family structure, and drugs/alcohol are the main causes of abuse in the world. Abuse is not only happening in the United States there are several other countries who face problems and cases with child abuse. Data on child abuse is hard to collecting because the lack of consistency in how information is collected. Before an accident of abuse is reported certain things must be recorded. This is a nationwide program to help children who are abused or neglected. In 1985 the federal government stopped helping with the CAPTA, but in 1988 it was replaced with the HHS, Department of Health and Human Services (Doak 2). Within many families in the United States child abuse is a problem. More than likely children whose parents have an aggressive background are more likely to be abused. Children who have young parents, parents with little or no education, has had several other children within only a few year, or is highly dependent on welfare are usually the ones to abuse their children. The main causes of child abuse in the United States is: Emotional abuse, family Structure, and drugs/alcohol (Doak 1).
From least common to most common, emotional is first. It is often referred to as psychological abuse. There are three types of families that typically have children who suffer from emotional abuse. The first type is a family with intimidating guardians, maybe the father is intimidating and with this it may lead to a power problem. The second type is a child who is different from others, himor her may be considered ugly, have a disability, or a child of a former spouse. The third is a family with a broken parent. Children with divorced parents usually suffer from several forms of abuse, like: physical and sexual abuse. In 2005 to 2006 children being abused in physical and sexual ways was the second highest and has not moved. Now physical abuse is right there with it at the number two spot (Doak 3).
The last type of abuse is abuse caused by drugs or alcohol. Parents who have a drug or alcohol addiction is very common in the United States. In 2002-2007 approximately 8.3 million, or 11.9% of all children live with one or more parents who have experienced drugs and alcohol or are still experiencing the addiction. 13.9% of younger than three experience a lot of abuse from this, 13.6% of children 4 to 6, 12% of children 7 to 11, and 9.9% of children 12 to 17 years old go through this kind of abuse (Doak
