The way we are raised affects our mentality when we are older. The Northerners and the Southerners grew up different ways and because of that they grew up differently. The Northern colonies was mostly centered around manufacturing and the Southern colonies was mostly centered around plantation. Because of this, there are many political, economic, and social differences. In the 1860 election, most Northern states voted for Abraham Lincoln who is a republican. On the other hand, the North believed that the federal government was superior to the state. The South was scared of the federal government gaining too much power because they didn’t want to be controlled. When the thirteen colonies where still a part of Great Britain, they were controlled by the motherland and they didn’t want that situation to happen again. Another huge difference between the North and the South was concerning the topic of slavery and the westward expansion of slavery. The North was against slavery and there were even some free slaves in that part of the United States. The South however used slaves to make them work on the plantations they owned and were treated as animals. The South supports the idea of slavery moving westward because that would allow plantation owners to focus on more important stuff such as mechanical advantages and inventions of all kinds. Another thing the South and the North kept butting heads over was the tariffs. The government put tariffs on imported goods so that all the Americans would rather buy products that were made right there in America. The South didn’t like this because
