The Civil War is known as one of the most devastating times in American history. This war that took place on American soil and killed the most people ever in a war. Expansion, government and the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 were major causes in the war.The irreconcilable differences between the North and South led to an American vs American war that will forever be remembered in history. First, the expansion and the rules that came with growing territory lead to the Civil War. As the country gained new territory came new responsibility. Each new state became a new battleground for the North and South to fight for a slave or non-slave state. This problem was temporarily solved by the Missouri Compromise, stating that the amount of slave and non-slave states must remain equal at all times. The issue of slavery was one of the main causes of the Civil War. Another cause for the Civil War was the difference of opinion on the government that would control America. The South felt that state rights were more important and that the federal government was taking away their rights and power. States’ Rights included each state having their own version of currency and leadership, this would have led to pure chaos. President Lincoln was fully anti-slavery and intended to abolish slavery as soon as he got in office. The North was also anti-slavery and looked at this election to be a win to the contrary of the South. Also the release of Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe brought the severity of slavery to the North’s attention and gave them a reason to fight. Other controversies that added to the causes of the Civil War were the Dred Scott Case and John Brown’s Raid. All of these events created a discord between the North and South, thus being one of the causes of the Civil
