The independent and blockbuster film are part of the modern day Hollywood system. They both coexist and at times represent the artistic and business side of the film industry. Overall the modern American film experience is predominately based on ticket, home video and rental sales. The film industry is currently based on entertaining the masses and ensuring financial success for the studio executives and investors. The American film industry can be compared to a brokerage firm which exist to make the firm a lot of money and if lucky the client as well. Blockbuster films are created to please the overall public. They are mainly comprised of high paid actors with target demographics. Blockbuster films are not as artistic as independent films as they do not invoke thought, controversy, or beauty. Blockbuster films are not even considered “art” by many film enthusiasts. This genre of filmmaking is highly corporate and affected by the seasons of the year. major studio blockbuster productions. An example of this is the 1992 Quentin Tarantino film “Reservoir Dogs.” This film was an indie masterpiece with a conservative budget of 1.2 million. The opposite would be the Disney / Marvel series Avengers which cost roughly 200 million to produce. These two films were polar opposites of each other with obvious variances in special effects and content. The action scenes in Reservoir Dogs were choreographed using different camera angles while the action scenes in Avengers were mainly superimposed with computer generated imagery (CGI). The actions scenes in Reservoir Dogs appear more natural and not exaggerated like the scenes shot in Avengers. Computer effects used in Avengers allow for the director to create more in depth scenes. Independent films may lack these same visual effects but make up for it with great acting and
