No matter where you are in the world, there is always a familiar landmark that will remind you of home and that is the golden arches of McDonald’s. Have you ever stopped to think who is behind the success of McDonalds? The answer is Richard and Maurice McDonald, two small town brothers with a big dream. The mastermind behind having McDonalds expand to worldwide success is actually a man named Ray Kroc, who is not even related to the McDonald’s.

It all started with two brothers from New Hampshire named Richard and Maurice McDonald. The McDonald brothers had a dream to become millionaires by the time they were fifty; therefore they packed their bags and moved to California in the late 1920’s. At the time, drive-ins were booming and they decided to change locations to San Bernardino, CA and open up a drive-in barbeque restaurant. The drive-in was the most successful in San Bernardino but the brothers knew they could do better and shut the successful business down in 1948. Convinced that they could be faster and more efficient if they cut down the menu and focused on a few items instead of 30 different things. They noticed their top sellers were hamburgers so when they reopened their doors the menu was simple: hamburgers, fries, shakes, and fountain drinks. Re-opening their doors later that year it became one of the first restaurants of its kind: fast, efficient, and cheap. The brothers were able to sell their hamburgers for fifteen cents due to their assembly line approach to making their food consequently McDonald’s fast food was born.

The McDonalds brothers revolutionized the food industry with the introduction of the assembly line system. The kitchen was customized with equipment made to help the flow of the cooks at their stations and not cause mishaps or collisions. The success of the McDonalds model led other restaurants like Burger King, Taco Bell, and Wendy’s to utilize the same assembly line approach as they did.
